New Words Contest

If you are anything like me, you love words. Dictionaries, thesauruses and word games are some of your treasured friends (BTW, we discovered a tremendous new word game this weekend called Syl-la-bles Easy to learn and truckloads of fun).

The dictionary I most often refer to is somewhat “old.” I won’t say how old, because that would spoil our contest. Below you will find several words that the publisher included in the “new words” section of this dictionary. Look at the list, then guess what year it was published, leaving a comment in this post. The two who guess the year or come the closest win a prize, one of two cds I have left from the Write to Publish conference: Jane Rubietta and Mary DeMuth. If more than two guess the exact year, I will give another prize from a former conference.

Ready? Here are the “new” words:

Brunch
Bulldozer
Corny
Doodlebug
Emote
Electronics
Foxhole
Gizmo
Global
Manpower
Microwave
Mugger
Phooey
Rookie
Telecast

You have until Thursday at 4:30 p.m to guess. I will post the winners Friday morning. Please include your email address if I don’t already have it. Thanks for playing and blessings on your week as you write for your Audience of ONE,
Jen

  1. lol...what a fun contest! I really have no idea, but I am going to take a wild guess and say...1975. That may be too early, but that's my guess, and I'm stickin' to it! :)

  2. I have no idea, but bulldozer made me think of Caterpillar. I do know that the tractors could be turned into tanks during WWII, but not sure if they used the word bulldozer then. I am going to guess 1940. I am probably way too early because I can't imagine Microwave,Electronics and Telecast being in use at that time. I can't wait to find out the answer.

  4. Electronics make me think it must be pretty early. At first I was thinking 1906, but LOL, now that I see the others' comments I may reconsider. I'm going with 1969. :-)

  6. Loving these! Keep 'em coming!

I am commenting on behalf of Susan Reinhardt, whose ornery browser won't let her comment. She thinks 1975. That's the year we were married...when I was five.

  7. Corny was around when I was growing up I think so I will guess 1965.

  8. Brain-trying-to-compute---Explosion!! I couldn't begin to try figuring out the year of Brunch! Maybe 1969? Wow, I'm clueless!

My thesaurus is one hard-used manual, so I appreciate this post!

  9. Jeanette:
I can only guess. These are words we all have used in our lifetimes. I am going to say 1945, a while before my time.:)
