What About YOU? Hero Memorials

Every Monday I ask a question, to get to know YOU better.

Okay, ready for today’s? For whom would you like to build a memorial?

Today is Memorial Day, when we honor those who willingly fight—sometimes to their death—to keep our freedom intact.

I do not have military heroes in my family tree. But I’d like to build a memorial to my second grade Sunday school teacher, a spiritual hero. This twenty-something college student willingly gave up dating/TV/goofing off time to study God’s word so she could teach it to a bunch of squirmy-pants seven-year-olds in a Los Angeles church attic classroom.

She painted a picture of Jesus in my heart that caused me to fall in love with Him, and surrender my heart and life to Him. I don’t remember her name; she may not still be on this earth. But she is my hero, who deserves the applause of Heaven for leading this little redhead into the Kingdom of God.

What about YOU?

  1. I'll give a shout out to my mom today.

She constantly amazes me with her strength, leaning into God quietly.

  2. What a sweet story to share!
I don't know right now who I'd do one too...have to think about it, I guess, if we're choosing someone we know.

Maybe my grandpa. He was wonderful.

  3. You've made me think. I would choose my husband who is persevering now matter how hard this road is:) He also served 7 years in the Marines and I know that has helped alot!

  4. I would choose my Mom. Since she passed away two months ago, I've been more sharply aware of her influence in my life over the years. She persevered through many things but trusted Jesus to be her strength.

  5. Jen:
I had an older friend who influenced me in my walk with Jesus. One time she advised me in a way she decided was wrong. She asked me for forgiveness.
She was important to her grandchildren. They were important to her. When there was a problem in her family, her health suffered(diabetes) but she helped those grands as best she and her husband could.

  6. Hi Jen -

I'm grateful for Christian parents, who provided a faithful example in both word and deed.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  7. Our time for remembering both veterans and those who have died is our "Remembrance Day", November 11th. I did a post then about three family members who had served in the Canadian military, each in different ways -- my father-in-law, my own father, and my uncle. My father and uncle both served within Canada, but my FIL fought at Vimy Ridge. He never talked of it, but he went on to become an ordained pastor with two sons who both went into ministry, too. His faith set a strong example for everyone who knew him.

  8. Oh I love this. I don't have military in my family either, so I would honor my two grandfathers who were preachers of God's word. One of my grandfather's preached up into his 80's at a little church in a small town in west Texas. To serve God so faithfully is such a blessing to have watched. Thanks for letting me share.

  9. I loved your story. It truly touched my heart.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say President Ronald Reagan. I have loved him for a very long time, ever since I heard him give "The Speech." If you are old enough, you may remember which one I mean. If not, it doesn't matter. I love all of our presidents in one way or the other, if for nothing more than taking on such a huge responsibility. And President Reagan was my favorite, (after Abraham Lincoln,of course.)

  10. You go right on out on that limb, Nancy. I loved President Reagan, too!

  11. You really have me thinking. It's a beautiful idea. I don't have any military in my family, either. I'd have to say my Grandmother who passed away when I was in my late 20's. She was a character! Her faith was also very strong, and she taught me a lot about God when I was very young.
