Phooey on New Year's Resolutions

I don't do New Year's Resolutions. I shatter them ten minutes into January 1st, then eat four brownies to try and drown my guilt. Then I can't zip my pants. So...

I settle for goals instead. They are gentler, kinder, and I can keep track of my progress on a paper tacked to my bedroom wall. Each time I put a check mark in a box next to a goal, I do the happy dance and eat one brownie to celebrate. With this method, I can still zip my pants up!

Do you make New Year's Resolutions, or goals?

Please share one or two with us.

  1. This will be the first year I don't verbally or mentally make resolutions. I've chosen ONE WORD to guide my whole year.

I'd like to invite you and your readers to join in that. You writers should have some thought provoking choices!

  2. Like I had mentioned in my post, I would rather go for the goal thing. I too thoroughly believe in patting my back when I achieve the goal! :D Lets see when will I get to pat my back again! :)

  3. I will have an agent by the end of 2011 and I will drink more water.

Hope your New Year is blessed!

  5. Happy New Year to you! I haven't made resolutions for years. It's always too depressing if I don't keep them. I have a list of "Intentions" instead... things I intend to do but since they aren't cast in stone it's not a catastrophe if I don't get them done. They're like goals... things to work at that are important to me. One involves a large carton of old family photos that I've been wanting to get into scrapbooks. Tackling the whole job has been too overwhelming and I've procrastinated, but I intend to make a start in 2011, get them sorted and begin the first of what will be many albums. My annual writing intentions don't change much -- finish the current w.i.p. and continue the search for an agent.

I love brownies but I think I'd need something more substantial than extra calories for motivation. :)

  6. Jeanette:
I have ditched the resolutions for goals-both personal and writing.
I have chosen the word FOCUS for my word of the year. I have chosen ISAIAH 55:11-12 for my scripture for 2011. There could be a reason God has led me to this term and to the passage.

  7. Happy New Year

I love the pic. of Snoopy, and your brownie happy dance :o). You make me smile.

I don't think I have ever made a new years resolution, and I'm not organized enough to be a goal setter. Clearly, I'm not from this planet :o)

I enjoy your sense of humor, and you have such a sweet countenance.

    God bless you

  8. I think New Years just gives us the opportunity to wipe the slate clean. We can do that any time of year, but we usually feel like the start of the new year is a new beginning. I tried to start my diet a week ago but last night got me so I'm starting over!

  9. Hi Jen -

I'm with you! No Resolutions will haunt 2011. Instead I choose to set goals.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  10. No resolutions for me, but I have a goal of spending more time writing and staying more focused and spending more time in prayer.

  11. Eating a brownie after checking off a completed goal? What a good idea. I set a word for a year and 2011 end goals, and monthly goals.
A couple of end goal this year is to submit up to 4 short stories and get a boyfriend! The latter is a stretch I think!

  12. I'm all about goals!! Mine is to get my manuscript shipped off in proposal form to the agents that requested a looksee and then to hold my breath and pray the Lord guides my steps.

  13. Me either... I don't even try any more! Goals are good, though!
