What About YOU? Well-planned Path or White Water Rafting?

A two-fold What About YOU?

Every Monday I ask a question, to get to know YOU better.
Ready for today’s? Do you set goals, or take life as it comes?
Since I was twenty-something, I’ve made lists, used planners, and set goals for my week, month, year and life. I even have a dream board on the wall of my bedroom, with pictures of things I’d like to achieve.

I realized early on that if I simply rafted down the creek, my undisciplined nature would take me into rough waters and over steep falls. Some people can lead productive lives without concrete goals and plans. I am not one of them.

Your turn…

  1. Sometimes I set goals but mostly I take life day by day. :-)

  2. I used to be much more of a planner. I'm not sure whether three kids gets so overwhelming I just stop writing it down or I've gotten skilled at knowing what needs to be done.

    Either way...I'm riding the raft.

  3. I am usually a very organized person, but lately I feel like I'm white water rafting.

  4. Being a counselor and setting goals with my residents for years, I am ALL about the goals! My husband and I always have a plan and when one time we didn't, it was so hard! I love to see where I'm going and how I can accomplish it.

  5. haa ha my brothers and I came up with a similar illustration which mostly applied to planning events but also applies to life. There's the "steamtrain" people who like to have a set plan and stick with it no matter what. Then there's the "highway driver" who has a plan but are flexible in case something isn't according to plan. Then there's the "four-wheelin'" type who just crash through it with no plan or schedule. Whatever happens they go along with.
I'm generally the "highway driver" type. I like to have a schedule and be uber organized, but I don't mind changing things up in order to be helpful to others. Unfortunately I think sometimes I'm a little too flexible and my schedule all-too-often gets tossed by the side :sigh: I should be a little meaner and say "NO" more often :P

  6. I'm always the planner and goal oriented. But I've also learned a new word these past years and that's "flexible". I try not to get stressed out when things don't work out the way I planned. And often the changes are better than any original plans I had!

  7. I'm a pretty big planner, but the older I get, the more I find I'm able to take some things day by day.

  8. I need to plan more. I do write down my goals for the year but they are basic. Like getting the windows replaced.

When it comes to my personal life goals I must admit, I write down my desires but rarely the steps I need to take to achieve them. I know I really need to do that. Great question.

  9. I set goals; I make lists...some weeks they are more helpful than others. My main challenge is making my self stay motivated to follow through on all my lists and goals. Deadlines help a lot.
    Blessings:)

  10. I find that I waste a lot of time without goals, so one of my goals is to stick to my goals for longer then two hours after I write them down. I've recently renewed my goals, and I'm doing pretty good.
    Thanks, Jeanette!

  11. I tend to walk a bit on that path, then jump into the water for a bit.......

  12. Neither can I!! I need goals. I need a POA. Without it, I'm just sort of floundering around aimlessly.

  13. Hi Jen -

I'm a goal oriented, list-making type of person. Yet, I'm open to changes in my agenda when the Lord has other plans.

I don't like living on the edge of a crisis. I'm more in the prevention mode.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  15. I have set many goals in my life: to be married, to have chidren, to be a writer. I make goals when I am working on a project and I stick to them, too. I'm rafting right now, enjoyihg the ride. May make some new goals if I get a sense of urgency or giftedness.

  16. Funny... I'm a planner, but I've learned not to plan my life. Too many things change!

  18. I always cheat on this type of answer, and go with the middleground...

I take the casual, meandering footpath next to the river.

  20. I love making the TO-DO list sometimes when I know that I have to squeeze a lot of tasks in a single day, so that I may not miss out on an important one. Otherwise, I go with the flow with a general idea about the day:)
