What About YOU?

I’m way too small to fill the world, even my own little corner of it. So every Monday I ask a question, to get to know YOU better. I’ll try to make it fun and lighthearted. After all, it is Monday. But now and then, I may throw in a serious one, just to get us all thinking.

Okay, ready for today's? What scent elicits the happiest memories for you?

Here is mine:
Eucalyptus takes me back to my childhood, when my brother, I, and the babysitter’s kids romped in a grove of Eucalyptus trees every day after school and throughout the summer. The woodsy-spicy smell of those earthy brown leaves relaxes my mind, eases my tension and brings a five-year-old's grin to my face.

Your turn…
P.S. Please return Wednesday when a fellow-member of my agent Diana Flegal's authors' group, Caroline Brown, interviews me! I will also be giving away my final two blogiversary prizes drawn from this month's postings as well as prizes drawn from comments on the interview....

  1. Loved that picture of your grandchildren in the last post! How precious!

I remember the scent of baking bread. My mother used to make homemade bread quite often and she'd have it warm and ready for us to eat when we got home from school. We'd slather it with butter. The bread machines now just can't compete with the old-fashioned homemade kind!

  3. Toss up...either my mother's lipstick...b/c it meant she was near to me or I was being sneaky and into her cosmetics or honeysuckle. I remember getting a wallop of the scent while riding bikes down by the beach in Nantucket. It was a memorable vacation.
Got the pens, etc. THANK YOU.

  5. Attar of roses. When my parents were just poor dorm directors, my dad somehow scraped up the $$ to buy my mother Joy Parfum. Oh, my mother brought the fragrance of a summer garden into every room she entered...

To this day I am an expensive perfume woman on a toilette budget. Sigh.

Thanks for the usual GREAT POST!!!!

  6. mmmmm ... no doubt about it - coffee. I remember being 3 and sitting next to Grampa who poured me BLACK Folgers coffee and hands me a cinnamon/sugar doughnut hole, winks, and says "your momma won't mind". Thus began our tradition that lasted until he died when I was 10. To this day, Folgers is the only cheap coffee I can gag down in memory of Grampa ... with a doughnut hole of course! :)

  7. Oooh, I love the smell of eucalyptus! I recently got some eucalyptus soap that I love to use.

I usually have the strongest memories from scents of flowers. Freesia reminds me of long summer nights when I was a teenager and lavender always brings back memories of when I was pregnant with my second daughter.

  9. Yumm-eee...

A National Geographic article from several decades ago cited a study that proved the sense of smell brings back stronger memories than the other senses. They even included scratch and sniff samples inside the magazine, a rarity thirty years ago!

  10. That's so sweet Jeanette. Thank you for sharing that story.

I just had to sit and think about it. Nothing really came to mind, until I remembered something that happened on Halloween. I smelled something like campfire smoke, or barbecue, or something, and immediately I thought about how I used to go to the hunting camp with my step-family, and how we'd race down dirt roads and I'd be sitting in the bed of the pick-up with my sister and cousins... Fun stuff. :-)

  11. When I was a child, my mother used a particular brand of face powder. To me, it became the "Mommy smell." She no longer uses it, but if she ever did, I'd recognize it in a second.

The fragrance brings back warm memories of watching her apply make-up, giving hugs, and wanting to be like her when I grew up.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  12. Brownies and pot pies. Both had to bake for so long that the anticipation was incredible for a young girl to take. :O)

Hope to see you over at my new blog home www.dianeestrella.com

  13. Brownies! The hint of cocoa chocolate floating through my room at odd hours of the night. My mother loved to bake when all the kids were tucked away.

Now I do the same thing!

  14. Fresh cut grass, meant summer time and no school! Puppy breath, kids after a bath, husbands cologne. And last but not least-food smells.

  15. My mom made cookies alot when I was a kid and so that is one of my favorite smells in life. On a weird note, the smell of moth balls takes me back to my grandmother's house where I explored and played with not a care in the world. What fun memories!

  16. Jeanette:
The scent of apples baking. It would fill the house as my mother and I would wait for the oven to do its job. Home Interior used to have a jar candle with that scent. But I had to stop getting them, candles make Hubby get migraines.

  17. Fresh brewed coffee! It reminds me of when my mother would come home from work and put on a fresh pot. I loved that scent. To this day I think of her coming home from work. *I'm praying HARD for your book* Let us know when it happens. =)

  18. The barn or any barn smell. It takes me back to my grandmother's farm where I feel I truly belong. Such beauty, sights, sounds, fuzzy animals, good people. It is a part of me, never to be taken away.

  19. Different scents take me to different places. It's amazing how you can have a scent hit you and immediatly a memory will wash over you, isn't it?

Vanilla, is one of my favs. I used to sit on the counter and just sniff the vanilla bottle during cookie making days. :)

Barnyard - takes me back to horseback riding lessons. BIG difference between a cow farm smell and a horse farm smell! Horse smell is tolerable! :)

Gardenia - takes me back to Africa. We had them growing in our garden the the scent is especially fragrant at night. LOVE that smell.

New baby smell - can't describe it very well, but I love that smell. And, alas, I think I'm done with that smell in my house. (Alas? NO! Thank you, God! :D 4 is enough!)
