Naked Nails; Another Dumb Thing I Did

My fingernails will be naked and short when I speak next month at the Inland NW Christian Writers Conference in Spokane Washington. Why?

Another Dumb Thing
Because I did a dumb thing last summer when I attended the Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference. I bought fake nails. Normally, I keep my nails fairly short and don’t polish them—it takes time I’d rather spend writing, reading, or playing Mexican Train dominoes with my honey. But I thought since I was pitching two books and meeting many people I wanted to impress, I should look professional and classy.

Not So Classy
While thumbing through my portfolio to grab a sample article, a business card, or a speaking brochure, those bulky nails got in the way and made me look more like a clown that a class act. I was embarrassed, but couldn’t take time from my fifteen-minute sessions with editors to say, “Hold on while I rip these nails off.”

Do you like your nails naked and short or painted and long?

  1. I think your nails look adorable. They're different, a great conversation starter, and an example of how writers have wonderful imaginations.

Most of the time, my nails are naked and short. I paint them only when I'm going to visit a school the next day.

  3. I saw the agony my daughters went through after paying a lot of money to "have their nails done" for proms back in high school. The acryllic just nearly destroyed their nails. I decided that wasn't for me. I've tried just painting pretty colors on my nails, but usually don't make it through the day. Don't laugh, the polish feels "heavy" on my nails in an unnatural way, just the way make-up foundation feels heavy on my face so I don't wear it either. I've pretty much lived my life "au natural" and will probably finsh out that way too. Honestly, I must confess, though, I sort of envy those who can pull off the look.

  4. I prefer my nails at a nice medium manageable length. I'd like to paint them more often but don't usually take the time.

    Have a lovely weekend! :)

  6. I so wish I had the time to invest in my nails. They get neglected. And usually even when I do take the time to take care of them they chip and peel quickly.

  8. NUDIE NAILS!!! That's me. I practically poked my eyeballs trying to remove contacts on my honeymoon and had to call my new DH into the bathroom. Embarrassing.

  9. LOL! Been there, done that. It's like being suddenly handicapped. Right before my first ever missions trip to teach at a Bible school in Chile someone in the church offered to pay for me to get acrylic nails. First (and last) time. Ever tried to put in contact lenses with acrylic nails? : )

  10. I do have my nails done (mani/pedi) when the weather gets warm. Mostly, I just slap on some clear coat for protection.

  11. I gave up my acrylic nails a year ago, but I will confess....I MISS THEM! Okay, Im vain and superficial! I never did have them very long, but they always looked nice and pretty. Jen, I'll be wearing fake ones at the conference when you come. Sigh.

  12. I prefer mine short and polished. Short nails are easier to type with. I haven't tried panda nails yet, but the ones in your picture are so cute that I just might have to!

    Blessings.

I don't polish my nails. I would like then medium length but have to settle for short. They all sag in the middle when they get too long.
I tried acrylic ones, I tried to apply them myself. I couldn't get them to stay on. I also had them too long to pick up change from a countertop. When I gave up trying, I had a mess with my real ones. Lesson learned, except I purchased a kit that had a quantity of the acrylics. I need to get rid of them. Another lesson learned.
