Must Milestone Birthdays Hurt?

My kind, thoughtful husband just passed a milestone birthday, and it hurt him worse than all the former birthdays combined.

I felt for him, but there is nothing I can do to turn back time. I wonder why these milestone birthdays hurt so much.

Could it be because our society worships those who have no wrinkles, sags, or many candles on their birthday cakes?

God tells us that gray hair is a crown of glory, and is found in the way of righteousness (Prov. 16:31, NIV).

In many cultures, older citizens are honored, not ignored, ridiculed, or sent out to pasture.

God and I think Kevin is pretty spectacular, even if our messed-up society doesn't.

Let's listen to God instead of others, and perhaps those milestone birthdays won't hurt so much!

Have you had any milestone birthdays? Did they hurt, or did you see them as crowns of glory?

  1. Oh my! I have three friends who died of cancer when they were 42. Their goal was to celebrate their 50th birthday, which they never did. Celebrate those milestones, my friend! And be thankful God has given your man another year to serve Him! Birthdays should never hurt, they should be thank God He still has work for me to do moments. Happy Birthday Kevin! Eat cake!Rejoice! Make love!!! Why not! You aren't dead yet!

  2. Yes, what is it with some of these milestone birthdays? I remember being a little upset at turning 30, which in light of turning 50 a few years ago, was absolutely nothing. I was just thinking last night that I am still in denial about actually being 50-ish.

Happy Birthday to Kevin! His worth is more than diamonds or any number. :)

  3. I agree with Elaine. Celebrate the milestones! Except for my body not being able to do what it once did, turning 60 was no big deal. I still enjoy life very much!

  4. Hi Jen! I would say that hitting 60 was the first birthday that gave me some pause... Not that I was depressed or anything, I think I just met my mortality square in the face. Maybe that's what your husband is experiencing? I don't mind aging, the alternative is not all that great! I have to be grateful that God has decided that I still have work to do for him.
    That's worth celebrating!
    Blessings,
    Ceil

  5. Jen: My family and friends "carried me high" when I turned 50. As I approached 60, I noticed more achy muscles and thought " Is this how it's going to be because I am going to be 60. Now that I am in that next decade, it bothered me a little as I approached it but now I realize that I can relax and enjoy the life God has given me.
Like Ceil said, "God has decided I still have work to do."

Happy Birthday Kevin. Live each day as God intends and you won't regret it.

  6. Hi Jen - 30 was traumatic because of the difficulties I experienced during that time. My current age is a little surreal. I still can't figure out where all those years went! There's still an 18-year-old living on the inside.
