Why Patriotism Is A Love/Hate Relationship

I used to think that patriotism meant flag-waving, tears-streaming while singing The National Anthem, undying devotion to our country. And it is all those things. But there's an element of sadness that makes patriotism a love/hate relationship.

• I love that I can say what I believe, even criticize someone in power, and not be jailed for it. 
• But I hate that politicians don't run for office on their own merits--they always dig up dirt about their opponents--even lies--to win the race. 

• I love that our government helps the poor, sick, and needy. 
• But I hate that some who aren't any of the above take advantage of govenment help, making the truly needy suspect. 
  

• I love that our nation was founded on Biblical principles, and we see Scriptures on many buildings and monuments in Washington, D.C. attesting to the fact that God was a major player in the forming of this land. 
• But I hate that we kicked God out of the schools and have watered down our text books to remove any mention of His hand in our success as a country. 

• I love that men and women are still willing to go to war and die to keep us and weaker nations free from oppression and tyranny. 
• But I hate that we don't pay them well or give them the medical care and respect they deserve. 

You can disagree with my views. You may call me a radical, narrow-minded, and a religious fanatic. That's your right and a given freedom of living in the U.S. A. 


And that right is at the top of my list of loves: we are free. God, help us to remain so.
