I'm doing a bit of research for a message I'm giving at two different writers conferences, and your answers to these simple questions will help make my talk more interesting:
When you were a kid, what was your favorite toy? And why did you like it so well?
Thanks for your help! Have a splendid week!
Jen: Looking back, I believe my favorite toy was a 'Bride Doll.' She was a Christmas present. My mother sewed and worked on the clothes after I was in bed. That was the only stretch of time she told me when to go to bed. She made clothes for that doll. It was a walking doll. I named her Rita. I think i liked her so well because she could walk and she wasn't a baby doll.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Quiet. I had a lovely bride doll that my grandma gave me when I was six, that she brought to the hospital for me after I had my tonsils out. It made me feel so special to wake up in my hosptial room and see Grandma sitting there with that huge doll in her arms!
DeleteA red plastic T-Rex that snapped together. It was about two feet tall and three feet long, if I remember it correctly. Its glow-in-the-dark eyes, nails and teeth scared me, so I propped it up by my bed, looming over me, so I would learn not to be afraid of it. I can't believe I did that now!
ReplyDeleteTurns out...my husband had an identical one!
It was made in the 1970's or earlier. A company called Aurora makes a replica now. I might get one!
Sandi: That is an amazing story. How courageous of you to put that scary thing by your bed to help you overcome your fear of it! Thanks for shaing, Jen
DeleteI'd say it would be my Betsy wetsy doll that I got one Christmas. I think I was 6 when I got her from my parents. I liked babies and happy to have something to cuddle. Also had a walking doll, that I liked as well! I named her Sheila after a friend.
ReplyDeleteAha, Becky. I think all us girls who grew up in the 60's had a Betsy wetsy doll! I also had a Chatty Katny, but she quit talking after I left her outside and she got rained on...
DeleteI loved all my dolls, but my favorites were Ginny and Ginnette. Ginny was a little girl, six inches tall. Ginnette was her baby sister. There were tons of outfits and furniture available for both of them. My grandfather built shelves in my closet, and I turned them into a bedroom, living room, and kitchen for those dolls. I wish I had kept them. They're collectors items now.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanette! I remember really enjoying 'Easy Weaver'. It was a plastic little loom, and I could make pot holders and little purses on it. I really am not 'artsy' at all, but I did enjoy making something that I could gift to my mom or aunts. It was fun!
