What About YOU: I Hate to Exercise!

Every Monday I ask a question, to get to know YOU better. Ready for today’s? What is your favorite way to exercise?

When the weather shows its affectionate side, my husband and I take lively two-mile walks up a nearby country lane. The traffic is so sparse that we act shocked when a car or pickup rumbles by.

If the weather refuses to smile, we walk around the inside perimeter of our church building for thirty minutes, discussing everything from music to meals.

When Kevin can’t fit in a walk, I jump on my treadmill. I hate it. Even when I listen to soul-stirring music, I find myself looking at the clock a jamillion times.

But... I’ve found I create better, sleep more peacefully, and wig out less when I exercise. So, like many things in life, I force myself.

Your turn

  1. I always thought the best way to exercise would be if somebody invented a machine where you could exercise in your sleep. Now, THAT would be my favorite.

Otherwise, it's probably walking really fast on my treadmill while reading. I used to run, but couldn't read at the same time. So I slowed myself down and do walking intsead.

In the summer, I'm known as that local crazy lady who walks her dog, her son in a stroller, AND reads at the same time. I get comments all the time.

  2. I don't really like exercise that much, but it's bearable with fun music. :-) Now, I love sports and if I could, I'd play those instead.
It's sweet you and your hubby walk together.

  3. I hate everything about exercise. I hate the burning muscles, the heart pounding, the wheezing, and the sweat running down my face and back. Bleh!

But, I need it oh-so very much! Interesting that you should write about this today, because I was going to start my pilates tape regimine today. :) (not as much sweating with this particular tape!)

  4. i like exercise, she says in a whisper. I don't make the time for it I'd like, but I can't tell you how refreshed I feel afterward. My favorite is a run on a chilly fall afternoon.

    Like Katie, I'm also a treadmill walker/reader.

  5. I hate it too! So much. I also miss nice weather. Right now I'm working out to a video. It's going well... can't wait to go outside, though!

  6. The truth is: I hate exercise, but if I am going to exercise....I want to hike through the woods. I love being in the midst of GODs creation.

  7. Tell me: how do you read while on a treadmill? Can I buy a book stand for it? That'd make it more enjoyable for me.

  8. Im with you there my friend! I have recently joined the Y and started going to a water exercise class for people with arthritis. It's pretty good, but I wish I could tolerate a better workout. I wish I liked a better workout! Keep up the good work.

  9. My excerise routine always starts out with good intentions but so far they have all fizzled out to nothing.

  10. My remote control thumb is pretty strong as are my chewing muscles. Other than that, I need to exercise.

  11. For me, it's walking. When I stop doing daily walks I become cranky, have trouble sleeping and my blood pressure goes up and the old body parts begin to cease and creak!

  12. I've been avoiding exercise as much as possible. My OBGYN is insistant that I jump on the health conscious train- and I know she's right. You have confirmed it.

  13. Hate it also. I have easy reading books that I read while walking on my treadmill that do a fairly good job of distracting me. Other than the sweat dripping that is.

  14. I can definitely relate! I don't enjoy exercising but I DO enjoy being outdoors and walking or hiking. Unfortunately, the weather here is not conducive to outdoor exercise a good deal of the year (like today, when I'd love to go for a walk outside, and it's still snowing for the second day in a row). Therefore, I'll retreat to my treadmill, but I'll probably check the clock every two or three minutes until I'm done!

  15. LOVE to exercise!!
My favorite? Jogging with trusty Laura at my side.
Next? Yoga/stretches while I watch Law & Order
Next? Riding stationary bike while watching Law & Order

LOVE getting that gray matter and flab matter going!!!

  17. ROCK CLIMBING!!! I love to climb - it's so much fun. It's not boring either because it involves strategy and technique. :)

  18. I had to take a medical 'leave' from Curves when I found out I had vertigo. I haven't done much exercising since.

I am very sedentary, I know that's not good.

  19. I don't like to exercise. At all. Sure, I'm aware of the need, of its benefits -- especially because I'm getting no younger -- but I'd rather be writing.

My preference, and I've got to get back to it, is yoga/pilates. I like that I can throw in a DVD and do it by myself at home.

I do also like to go walking with my family when the weather permits. It's been a long while on that one, though.

  20. I like exercise, but haven't done it in a while. I felt so much better, but I wasn't working and tending to parents. But, I know that's no excuse. I walked and did weight training.

  21. Oh no. I had planned to build in time to excercize tonight when I got home and here I sit:( Oh well, there is always tomorrow!

  22. I don't like exercise, but I like the results. My gym membership costs a lot less than physical therapy and keeps my back in tip-top shape.

Normally, my routine involves the recumbent bike, weights, the exercise ball, and the treadmill. I've been going to the gym 3-4 times per week for over 10 years.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  23. I love a brisk walk outdoors. Not too hot, not too cold - sunny and in the 50's is about right.
    :) Blessings!

  24. I love to get out into the garden in good weather. I bend and stretch as I tackle the persistent weeds but I know it's not very effective as exercise. Other than that I enjoy a walk. The only problem is that I get sidetracked observing things on my walk, and I slow down to a saunter. I suppose the honest truth is that I don't really exercise at all! ;)

  25. In the summer, I go on walks. Alas, the scenery is not anywhere as lovely as your lane. I used to dance to music. That's lots of fun, but I haven't the time or will to get into that right now. (I mean as a routine. I still dance when the mood hits me.)

  26. I'm with the walkers. But you know what I do when the weather is lousy and I've forgotten to go to the track? I use my daughters' DDR game. It really is fun. Just have to make sure I don't throw a knee.

  27. I love a good walk on the treadmill. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Y membership for financial reasons, and we don't have a treadmill of our own. I wouldn't have any place to put it!

In the summer I like to mow the lawn with our good old push mower. Otherwise, I hate to exercise! I get so bored! I'm doing Weight Watchers right now and have lost 7 pounds. However, I know I need to exercise in order to keep losing.

    Love and Hugs, Leslie

  28. First off, I need that t-shirt. That's how much I despise exercise. Sad part is it always DOES make me feel better. My husband tries to beat that into me (not literally) ;) Being in the AF, physical fitness is important to him as well as a part of keeping him IN the AF. So he has to exercise. He's constantly trying to get me to go w/ him. I love what you wrote about walking up the lane w/ your hubs. We do the same & it's always so peaceful & it's like it's "our time". We do this on the beach.

  29. Exercise is not my favorite thing to do but it is getting better. Not as bad as it was two months ago. I am hoping one day I will like it and look forward to it. It may take some time but maybe one day.
Take care Jeanette, have a blessed weekend.

  30. I hate exercising, but when I do, normally it's on the treadmill. In the summer time though, I love to run to the beach.
