Your Mission, Should You Decide to Accept It...

Have you ever made a mission statement? Whether you are a writer, a Christian wanting to win others to Jesus, or a ballerina, a mission statement will help you keep your heart and mind focused.

During a recent time of soul-searching, I sat at my computer and typed these words:

What do I want to write?
  • Clean humor for adults that will ease their stress, give them joy in their relationships, and offer them a new outlook on the world and the Lord.
  • Devotional articles and books that bring Jesus alive to those who don’t know Him, or change the thinking of those who have erroneous ideas about Him.
  • Fiction stories and books that delight, teach and inspire.
  • Children’s stories and books that make kids giggle, grow, learn, and lean on Jesus.
How do I want to write it?
  • Fresh.
  • Funny.
  • Relatable.
  • Thoughtful.
  • Real.
Questions that I need answered:

  • Is this what you want me to do, Lord?
  • Or, is it only my idea?
  • Can I do this without making my husband feel left out and shoved aside?
  • Can I do this without pushing myself forward, but letting YOU open doors for me in YOUR way and YOUR time?

I am still seeking the Lord for direction in my writing, and my life. If I ever stop seeking Him, I know I'm in for major trouble. But, this mission statement is keeping me focused on my target.

Do you have a mission statement? How has it helped you?

  1. My first "mission" is to be the best mother and wife I can be. I have set a few other goals which I'm hoping to reach slowly but surely.

    Blessings~

  2. I do. It's listed as my vision on my blog. I'll tell you, I absolutely love those last questions that need answered. What a great reminder that there is much that goes into just putting those words on the page.

  3. I have not done a mission statement in a long time, and I need to update it. Was just thinking about this the other day, so glad you reminded me!

  4. Hi, Jeanette!

I tried doing this years ago, came up with something and now I'm not sure where that is. I'll have to do a search...or maybe I should do some fresh soul searching on this now considering all my questions, too.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I'm so out of touch with everyone who is so supportive on-line. Looking forward to interacting more with you all again, even if only spiradically.

  5. Hmmm, no mission statement verbalized or written down, but I know in my heart what I want to do, and I hope it's what God wants for me too.

  6. Hey! Your statement sounds good to me.

Hmmm. Is ine the tagline, Spanning Seas and Secrets, or The secrets women keep and why they keep them or Write for the Audience of One???

Thank GOODESS God knows my heart! These labels all get jumbled up in my little mind!!!

  7. This is great. I don't have a mission statement but I have prayed over every story and plot line and asked the Lord for guidance. I write about questionable characters with questionable morals sometimes, but always I write stories of redemption. =)

  8. Kinda sorta? Maybe? Not set in stone.

I've made an actual "why I write" list, but am not convinced my mission statement is set.

The four questions-that-need-answered are very good ones. Wonder if we ever get to stop wrestling with them?

  9. I really like the questions you pose. I'm not always sure I am on God's target with my goals. I have written intentions in the past but a personal mission statement is a great idea. Thanks.

  10. No, I don't have a mission statement, but what an awesome idea! I'll definitely have to give that some thought (and prayer).

  11. Great post! You've really thought things out. I read a book by Christina Katz that really helped me define my mission.

  12. Oh, Jeanette, I'm still building my mission statement. Trying out floor plans and seeing if the Master likes'em. :)

  13. I need a mission statement and don't know why I haven't thought of it before. I had one when I began leading my Christ Care Group so I should have thought of it for my writing.

  14. Hi Jen -

I have a mission, but it's written on my heart rather than on paper. My blog name talks about writer/reader connections, but my vision extends to the whole church.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  15. This is what I'm most prayerful about: Is this what you want me to do, Lord?

I want to be open and ready, to do it as He would have me do it. Particularly when it comes to my writing.

  16. Not really :( I am juggling questions.
